The Chien-Cheng Circle, the roundabout where Chongqing North Road meets Nanjing West Road, was for most of the 20th century the most celebrated food market in Taipei — a dense ring of stalls that grew up around an air-raid shelter pond in the Japanese era and fed the city for generations. A glass food-court rebuild in 2003 failed and was demolished, and the site is now a small landscaped plaza.
The circle itself is more memory than attraction, but it remains the reference point for the old Dadaocheng food scene; many of the famous vendors dispersed into the surrounding lanes, where their stalls and shops still trade.
