This memorial hall occupies the old Taihoku North Police Station, a 1933 building whose wedge-shaped corner and rare surviving fan-shaped detention cells are themselves part of the exhibit. The museum tells the story of the New Culture Movement of the 1920s, when a generation of Taiwanese intellectuals led by Chiang Wei-shui pressed for education, civil rights and a distinct Taiwanese identity under Japanese rule.
The displays cover the Taiwan Cultural Association, the early newspapers and the political activism of the period — much of which played out in the streets of nearby Dadaocheng. Free and quietly powerful.
