Taipei's North Gate, formally Cheng'en Gate, is the strongest survivor of the old walled city. Four historic gates remain, but this salmon-coloured Qing-dynasty gate is the one that still reads most clearly as an original defensive structure.
It is an easy stop between Taipei Main Station, Ximending, and the old streets around Datong. Look closely at the South Fujian-style form and the tiled outer walls, then pair it with nearby Futai Street Mansion for a short walk through the city's early urban history.
