Taiwan's first and most important museum of contemporary and modern art, opened in 1983 in a striking glass-and-white modernist building on the north side of the city. The collection focuses on Taiwanese artists of the 20th century and is particularly strong on the Nihonga painters who trained during the Japanese colonial period and the later modernist and contemporary schools. TFAM also hosts the Taipei Biennial in odd-numbered years, one of the most important contemporary art events in East Asia. The building itself — a cascade of rectangular white forms with wrap-around glass walls — is almost as interesting as the contents. Closed Mondays.
