Treasure Hill

Reclaimed hillside squatter village turned artist community

Treasure Hill is a tight cluster of concrete shacks climbing the steep north bank of the Xindian River in Gongguan, in the south of the city — a former informal settlement that escaped demolition in 2003 thanks to a long campaign of artists and architects. Today it is preserved as an "artist village", with around twenty resident artists working in studios scattered among the houses of long-time residents.

The lanes are too narrow for cars, often only a metre wide, and twist up the hillside through a series of small terraces, plots of vegetables and chickens, and ad-hoc gallery spaces. Free to wander; some of the studios have set opening hours. A small hostel inside the village (Attic) lets visitors stay the night. MRT Gongguan station, then a short walk.

A story
Treasure Hill grew up in the 1960s and 70s as an informal settlement of retired Nationalist soldiers and other migrants, building stacked concrete houses up the slope above the Xindian River. The city government scheduled it for demolition in 2003; sustained protests led to its reprieve and an unusual experiment — a 'symbiotic' community where surviving residents continue to live alongside artists and a small hostel.
