Four Four South Village

Preserved 1940s military dependents' village in the shadow of Taipei 101

Address 50 Songqin Street, Xinyi District, Taipei

Four Four South Village (Sisinan Village) is a small cluster of single-storey houses built in 1948 to house workers and soldiers of the 44th Arsenal and their families. It is one of the last surviving juancun — the improvised military dependents' villages thrown up across Taiwan after 1949 — and survives as a pocket of low-rise nostalgia directly beneath the glass towers of the Xinyi district.

The restored houses now hold a small cultural museum, a few cafes and design shops, and a popular Sunday farmers' market (Simple Market). It is a short walk from Taipei 101 and makes an easy, free counterpoint to the surrounding shopping malls; the contrast between the tiled village roofs and the skyscraper behind them is one of the city's signature photographs.
