Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Modernist ceremonial hall to the founder of the Republic of China

Address 505 Ren'ai Road Sec 4, Xinyi District, Taipei

The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall sits in a broad public park a few blocks north of Taipei 101 — a sweeping yellow-tiled roof on a heavy modernist concrete base, designed by the Taipei architect Wang Da-hong and opened in 1972. It commemorates Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, with a giant bronze statue in the main hall.

The honour guards change in a precise, formal ceremony at the top of each hour during opening times, which is the principal reason most visitors come. The surrounding park is one of central Taipei's best open spaces, with one of the city's classic Taipei-101 photo angles framed across the lawn at the eastern end. Free entry.
