Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

Former tobacco factory turned design and exhibition complex

Address 133 Guangfu South Road, Xinyi District, Taipei

The 1937 Songshan Tobacco Factory was one of the largest industrial complexes in Japanese-era Taiwan, producing cigarettes for the colonial monopoly. The factory closed in 1998 and the buildings — broad single-storey ferro-concrete halls with double-pitched tiled roofs, set around a square of lawns and a long ornamental pond — have been adapted into a design and exhibition park.

The complex houses the Taiwan Design Museum, the well-curated Not Just Library, several galleries, a hotel, and a permanent line-up of design and craft shops. The 2014 Taipei Cultural and Creative Park building at the back, a curving pale-clad pavilion by Toyo Ito, is one of the city's most striking pieces of contemporary architecture. Free entry to the grounds; some exhibitions ticketed.
