Farhad and Shirin Monument

This bronze monument stands on a rocky hilltop above the city, depicting the tragic lovers Farhad and Shirin from the classical Persian and Turkish literary tradition. The site is reached by a road that winds up from the town below, and the hilltop itself provides excellent panoramic views over the Yeşilırmak valley and the surrounding countryside.

The monument is not ancient — it was placed here in modern times to mark the legendary connection between the love story and the Amasya area. But the hilltop location and the views make it worth the journey, especially in the late afternoon when the light is good. The story of Farhad and Shirin features in the works of Nizami and numerous later poets; if you are unfamiliar with it, the monument will prompt you to look it up.

A story
The legend of Farhad and Shirin is one of the great tragic romances of Persian and Turkish literature. Farhad, a stone-cutter, fell in love with Shirin, who was promised to a king. He was told he could win her hand if he cut a channel through the Elburz mountains to bring milk to the city — an impossible task, which he undertook anyway. According to the legend connected to Amasya, it was on this hilltop that the heartbroken Farhad threw himself off the cliff when tricked into believing Shirin was dead.
