Basmane District

Basmane, the district around İzmir's old railway station, is one of the city's most layered and complex neighbourhoods — simultaneously a budget traveller hub, a working-class residential area, and a repository of late Ottoman architecture in various states of preservation. The neighbourhood's backstreets contain 1920s apartment buildings, converted hans, and small workshops.

The Basmane train station itself, an Art Nouveau building dating from the early twentieth century, is worth a look. The station connects İzmir to Ankara and beyond via the Turkish state railway network, and its great arched hall — now partly derelict — is one of the few remaining examples of late-Ottoman railway architecture in the city.
