Sığacık and Seferihisar (Slow City)

Sığacık is the small harbour village attached to the larger town of Seferihisar, about 50 kilometres south of İzmir. The harbour itself is a working fishing port with a restored Genoese castle above it, and the village has developed an organic farmers' market on Saturday mornings that draws visitors from across the region.

The combination of the castle, the harbour café tables, and the market makes Sığacık one of the most rewarding short excursions from İzmir. A local bus from İzmir's Üçkuyular bus terminal takes about an hour. Go on a Saturday morning, buy something at the market, and have lunch watching the fishing boats.

A story
Seferihisar became Turkey's first Cittaslow (Slow City) in 2009 — a designation awarded to towns that protect their traditional character, local food, and sustainable practices. The designation came with a requirement to maintain a population under 50,000 and to preserve traditional crafts and farming. Seferihisar's tangerine orchards are now internationally known, and the town has developed an organic market, supported local artisans, and improved its historic centre as part of its Cittaslow commitments.
