İzmir's metro (İZBAN and Metro İzmir) is one of the most useful transport systems in Turkey for visitors, connecting the airport at Gaziemir in the south through the city centre to Bornova in the northeast, with a commuter rail line extending along the coast. The system is clean, frequent, and inexpensive — a single journey costs around 12 Turkish lira with an İzmirim card.
The metro is the fastest way to get from the airport to central İzmir (about 30 minutes to Üçkuyular or Konak), and the commuter rail running north along the bay shore gives access to the Alsancak ferry terminal and Karşıyaka. Combined with the ferry system, it makes İzmir genuinely easy to navigate without a car or taxi.
