Smyrna Ancient City

The site of ancient Smyrna lies primarily beneath the modern city, but significant remains have been uncovered in excavations ongoing since the 1930s. The Agora in Konak is the most impressive exposed section, but the ancient city extended up the hill toward Kadifekale, and traces of Hellenistic walls and public buildings have been found throughout the old districts.

The İzmir Archaeological Museum provides the best overview of what has been recovered — including the famous marble statues of Poseidon and Demeter, and thousands of smaller finds spanning three millennia of continuous occupation. For visitors interested in the ancient city, the combination of the museum and the Agora site gives a good picture of Smyrna's scale and importance.

A story
Ancient Smyrna was one of the most contested cities of the ancient world — destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, conquered by Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans, and Byzantines. The philosopher Aristides, who lived here in the second century CE, called it "the most beautiful city in Asia." When the city was devastated by earthquake in 178 CE, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius reportedly wept when he read Aristides' plea for help — and then funded the reconstruction.
