Atatürk Museum

Address Atatürk Caddesi No. 24, Alsancak, İzmir

The Atatürk Museum occupies an elegant neoclassical mansion on the Alsancak waterfront, originally built by a Levantine merchant in the 1870s. The building was used by Atatürk during his visits to İzmir and has been preserved largely as he left it — his personal rooms on the first floor, including the bedroom, study, library, and meeting room, are displayed with original furnishings.

The museum provides an unusually intimate view of Atatürk's personal surroundings, and the Levantine mansion itself — high ceilings, French furniture, Uşak carpets, crystal mirrors — says something important about the cosmopolitan İzmir that Atatürk knew and admired. Open Tuesday through Sunday.

A story
Atatürk stayed in this house on several visits to İzmir between 1930 and 1934. The building was originally constructed between 1875 and 1880 by a carpet merchant of Levantine origin — one of the thousands of European traders who made İzmir their home in the nineteenth century. The house was purchased by İzmir Municipality and given to Atatürk as a gift in 1926; after his death in 1938 it passed through several hands before being opened as a museum in 1941.
