Three enormous madrasas — Ulugh Beg (1420), Sher-Dor (1636), and Tilya-Kori (1660) — arranged around a single square. Each facade is covered in elaborate tile work, and the scale is staggering. The Ulugh Beg madrasa is the oldest and most refined; the Sher-Dor is famous for its tiger mosaics (unusual in Islamic art); the Tilya-Kori's gilded interior mosque is the highlight of the trio. Visit in the late afternoon when the light turns the facades golden, or come back at night for the sound and light show.
