Rukhabad Mausoleum

Small 14th-century mausoleum near Gur-e-Amir, said to hold hairs of the Prophet

The Rukhabad — 'abode of the spirit' — is a modest brick mausoleum on the walking street that connects the Registan to Gur-e-Amir. It dates from the 1380s and was built by Timur for the Sufi sheikh Burhan ad-Din Sagardji. The story Timur is said to have told is that a casket holding seven hairs of the Prophet Muhammad lay inside the dome, and that he himself dismounted whenever he passed in respect.

The building is unusual: a cubical mass with a high brick dome and almost no glazed-tile decoration, in contrast to the surrounding monuments. It is one of the oldest surviving Timurid structures in the city and has the quiet, austere feel of a working pilgrimage site rather than a tourist monument.
