Samarkand's sights are concentrated enough that you can walk between most of them in a day, though you will want to take your time. The Registan and Shah-i-Zinda alone deserve a full morning. Ulugh Beg's observatory and the Afrosiab ruins sit on the northern edge of town, an easy taxi ride from the centre.
