Xuân Hương Lake is the geographical and social heart of Dalat — a 320-hectare reservoir built by the French in 1919 by damming the Cam Ly River. The 7km walking and cycling path around its shoreline is the city's best free activity: pine trees, flower gardens, swan paddle-boats for rent, and vendors selling grilled corn and sweet potatoes. In the early morning it fills with locals exercising; in the evening it becomes a promenade. The colonial-era Dalat Palace Hotel and the Golf Club overlook the northern shore, and the central market is a short walk from the eastern end.
