Blackall

Outback Queensland wool town tied to the Black Stump, artesian water, and shearers.

Blackall is a small Outback Queensland town on the Matilda Way, a long way from the coast and proud of it. Its claim is not scenery so much as identity: wool, artesian water, sheep-shearing records, and the old phrase "beyond the Black Stump" all gather here in a way that makes the town more than another fuel stop.

The strongest reason to pause is the Blackall Historical Woolscour, an intact steam-era wool washing plant just outside town. It is rare industrial heritage, and the guided tours make the old machinery and shed life easier to picture.

In town, the Black Stump and Jack Howe Statue are quick stops, but they tell you why Blackall matters in Australian folklore. End the day in the Blackall Artesian Aquatic Centre, soaking in warm basin water after a long drive.
