Gorica Bridge

The Gorica Bridge spans the Osum River between the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, its seven stone arches dating from the 18th century Ottoman period. It is the most photographed structure in Berat after the castle and the Mangalem windows, and with good reason: standing on the bridge gives simultaneous views of both banks, with the castle on the hill behind and the river running clear below.

The bridge was built to replace an earlier wooden structure that had repeatedly washed away in the Osum's spring floods. The current stone version has survived intact. In the evening, locals walk across it as part of the passeggiata and sit on the low walls watching the river. The bridge is the natural transition point between the Muslim and Christian quarters of the town and was historically the meeting point for trade and social exchange between the two communities.
