Church of the Holy Trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a medieval Byzantine church perched on the lower slope of the castle hill, dating from the 13th century. It is one of the best-preserved medieval churches in Berat outside the castle walls, a small cruciform building with fresco fragments still visible on the interior walls. The church is sometimes locked but can often be opened by asking nearby residents.

The approach through the old cobbled lanes of the castle slope takes you past several other churches and past some of the most characteristic houses in Berat — two and three storeys, their upper floors leaning slightly over the narrow street, with the rows of large windows that define the town's appearance. The Holy Trinity Church is roughly midway between the town's lower streets and the castle gate, making it a natural rest stop on the climb up.
