The wooded hill of Kreuzbergl, immediately west of the old town, is Klagenfurt's local park and Sunday-morning forest. A short, steep climb leads past the small Calvary chapel to a hilltop with a public observatory, the city's planetarium and a viewing platform over the lake basin.
A network of paths winds among beech and oak; in autumn the colour is exceptional. The Botanical Garden, with its alpine plants in scree beds, sits on the southern slope. The whole hill is a fifteen-minute walk from the centre — a useful breather from urban sightseeing.
