Klagenfurt's city theatre is a handsome Jugendstil building, opened in 1910 and designed by Fellner and Helmer — the great Viennese theatre architects who built playhouses in Vienna, Prague, Odessa and a dozen other cities of the old Habsburg empire. The white-and-gold auditorium has been carefully restored.
The programme covers opera, ballet, drama and operetta from September to June, with a strong house ensemble and frequent guest productions. Even if you don't go to a performance, take a peek at the lobby and the cafe on the ground floor.
