The broad central square is anchored by Klagenfurt's most famous monument: a stone dragon rearing up from a granite plinth, carved in 1590 from a single block of chlorite schist. The Lindwurm is the symbol of the city — based, legend has it, on the skull of a woolly rhinoceros found in the local clay. The square itself is lined with elegant facades and makes a fine starting point for exploring the old town.
