One of the largest medieval squares in Austria, flanked on all sides by Baroque and Renaissance townhouses. The centrepiece is the marble Trinity Column, erected in 1723 to mark the city's survival of plague, fire, and Turkish invasion. The square is still very much in use — market stalls on certain days, trams crossing the southern end, and the starting point for most Old Town walks. From here the narrow lanes of the historic quarter fan out in all directions.
