Pöstlingberg

Hilltop pilgrimage church reached by historic tram

Address Pöstlingberg, 4040 Linz
Admission Free (tram fare applies)

A wooded hill rising 255 metres above the Danube, with a twin-towered pilgrimage church at the top visible from much of the city. The main reason to come up is the view over Linz and the valley, which is genuinely good on a clear day. The tram from the Urfahr district on the north bank is the nicest way to arrive — it's a slow, creaking ride through gardens and small station stops, and the whole thing takes about 20 minutes.

A story
The Pöstlingbergbahn opened in 1898 and was engineered to climb a 10.5% gradient — steeper than virtually any adhesion railway in the world at the time. It originally ran on a different track gauge than the city trams below, requiring passengers to change; the systems were only integrated in 2009 when Linz became European Capital of Culture.
