New Cathedral

Austria's largest church with exceptional stained glass

Address Herrenstraße 26, 4020 Linz
Admission Free

The largest church in Austria by interior volume, built between 1862 and 1924 in a Neo-Gothic style that owes a visible debt to French Gothic cathedrals. The stained glass windows are exceptional, including one panel depicting Linz during World War II — a surprisingly frank subject for a church window. The exterior is massive and a little severe, but the interior rewards a look, particularly the windows and the sheer scale of the nave.

A story
Emperor Franz Joseph imposed a condition on its construction: the New Cathedral must not exceed the height of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. The architects obeyed the letter but not the spirit — the building is taller than St. Stephen's at the nave, but the spire was deliberately kept shorter, reaching 134 metres against Vienna's 137 metres.
