Stadtpfarrkirche (City Parish Church)

The parish church where Mozart's father was married and young Mozart performed

Address Pfarrgasse 7, 4020 Linz
Admission Free

The City Parish Church (Stadtpfarrkirche) stands just off the Hauptplatz in the heart of Linz's Old Town. The current Baroque building dates largely from the 17th century, with a façade that anchors one end of the main square's visual ensemble. The interior is richly decorated in the Austrian Baroque manner, with stucco ceilings and side chapels of varying elaborateness.

The church's main historical distinction is its connection to the Mozart family — Leopold Mozart's marriage here in 1747 made it, in a sense, the church where the conditions for Wolfgang's existence were established. A memorial inside notes this connection. The church is always full for Sunday masses; at other times it is a quiet, accessible refuge from the busy square outside.

A story
Leopold Mozart married Anna Maria Pertl in this church in 1747, and the young Wolfgang Amadeus performed here on several occasions during the family's travels. In 1783, when he was twenty-seven and already famous, Mozart stayed in Linz and composed his Symphony No. 36 in just four days specifically to have something new to perform at a concert here. It has been known as the Linz Symphony ever since.
