Begijnhof Sint-Amandsberg is Ghent's quieter, later beguinage, built east of the centre after the older communities came under pressure. Its ordered streets, brick houses, church, and enclosing walls preserve the atmosphere of a self-contained religious community on a surprisingly large scale.
It rewards slow wandering. Compared with the more central historic sights, Sint-Amandsberg feels residential and hushed, giving a different view of Ghent's religious and social history beyond the belfry, canals, and guild houses.
