Korenmarkt

Main pedestrian square linking the historic centre to the shopping streets

The Korenmarkt (Wheat Market) is the main square of the historic centre and Ghent's primary pedestrian space, flanked by the Post Office building on one side and terrace cafes on the other. Saint Nicholas' Church anchors the north end. Trams run through the square; the pedestrian streets of the shopping district extend south.

It is not the most beautiful square in Ghent — the surrounding architecture is mixed — but it is the city's natural gathering point, busy at all hours, and a good orientation point for the rest of the historic core. The view north from the square, with the three towers aligned behind each other, is one of the classic Ghent perspectives.
