Ghent City Hall

Remarkable split-style city hall — Gothic on the left, Renaissance on the right

Address Botermarkt 1, 9000 Ghent

Ghent's Stadhuis is one of the more architecturally distinctive city halls in Belgium, not because it is uniformly beautiful, but because it is visibly unfinished in an interesting way. The left half is ornate Brabantine Gothic, begun in the early 16th century; the right half is Renaissance, built later when the city's money ran out and tastes had changed. The two halves sit side by side without attempting to match.

The interior contains the Pacification Hall (Pacificatiezaal), where the Pacification of Ghent was signed in 1576 — a short-lived alliance between Flemish cities to expel the Spanish — and the Throne Room. Guided tours of the interior run on certain days; check the city's tourism website for current schedules.
