Cipiko Palace

Cipiko Palace stands on the main square of Trogir's old town and represents the peak of Gothic civic architecture in Dalmatia. The facade is dominated by a triple-light Gothic window — an intricate piece of stone carving with interlaced tracery and small carved figures — that dates from around 1470. It is the single most reproduced image of Trogir and justifiably so.

The interior of the palace is now partly used as apartments and is not generally open to visitors, but the courtyard can sometimes be glimpsed through the entrance. The square outside the palace — Gradski Trg — is lined with cafe tables and is the best place in Trogir to sit and look at medieval architecture while drinking coffee.

A story
The Cipiko family were the most powerful nobles in Trogir during the 15th century. Koriolano Cipiko, a humanist scholar and naval commander, fought under the Venetian admiral in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and kept a record of the campaign. His palace bears the finest Gothic window in Trogir — a three-light window with elaborate stone tracery that has been photographed and reproduced so often it has become a symbol of the city.
