Kamerlengo Castle

Kamerlengo Castle occupies the southwestern tip of Trogir's old town island, its circular tower rising directly from the sea. The 15th-century Venetian fortress was built to guard the harbour and protect the city from Ottoman attack — a role it served for two centuries. Today the walls and tower are open to visitors, and the climb to the top gives a sweeping view over the harbour, the island of Čiovo across the strait, and the mountains behind Split to the east.

The interior of the castle courtyard is bare but large, which is why it works so well as an outdoor venue. In summer, films are projected against the old stone walls and concerts use the space regularly. The combination of the mild Dalmatian night, the starlit sky over the open courtyard, and the medieval setting makes even a modest event feel somewhat romantic. Check what is on when you visit.

A story
The name Kamerlengo comes from the Italian title of the Venetian treasurer-administrator (camerlengo) who governed Trogir during the centuries of Venetian rule. The Venetians built the castle in the 15th century at the southwest corner of the old town island, using it as both a fortress and a prison. In summer the castle courtyard hosts open-air cinema screenings and concerts — one of the more atmospheric venues for an evening out on the Dalmatian coast.
