Bølgen (The Wave)

Vejle's most photographed building sits on the eastern waterfront at Tirsbæk, a few kilometres from the town centre. Bølgen — Danish for "the wave" — is a residential complex of 114 apartments designed by the architecture firm Henning Larsen, completed in 2012. The building undulates along the fjord edge in a continuous wave form, its white facades curving and tilting in a way that catches light differently throughout the day.

It is a private residential building, so you cannot go inside, but the exterior is freely accessible from the water's edge. The best view is from a distance — from the opposite bank of the fjord or from the Vejle Fjord Bridge — where the full sweep of the wave profile reads clearly against the water and the hills behind it. Up close, the individual apartments and balconies are interesting in their own right: each unit is slightly different in orientation, and the cladding material changes with the angle. It is a convincing argument that functional housing can also be genuinely ambitious architecture.
