KUMU Art Museum

Estonia's flagship art museum in a landmark 2006 building in Kadriorg Park

KUMU is Estonia's largest and most important art museum, opened in 2006 in a striking building embedded into the limestone escarpment at the edge of Kadriorg Park. The permanent collection covers Estonian art from the 18th century to the present, with particular strength in the early 20th century national romantic movement and in Soviet-era Estonian art — the latter is frankly fascinating as a document of creativity maintained under ideological pressure.

The temporary exhibitions are ambitious and well-executed by any European standard, and the building itself — clad in limestone and glass, cascading down the hillside — is worth visiting as architecture. About 2 kilometres from the Old Town by tram.

A story
KUMU was designed by Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori and opened in 2006 after nearly 20 years in planning. It won the Museum of the Year award from the European Museum Forum in 2008. The building cuts dramatically into a limestone cliff on the edge of Kadriorg Park, with seven floors of gallery space that feel much lighter than you'd expect from a building mostly buried in rock.
