Museum of Estonian Architecture

Architecture museum in a converted 19th-century exchange building at the Old Town edge

The Museum of Estonian Architecture occupies the Börsihoone (Exchange Building), a neoclassical 19th-century building on the edge of Tallinn's Old Town, and covers the history of Estonian architecture from medieval times to the present. The permanent collection documents the country's transitions between wooden vernacular buildings, Soviet modernism, and contemporary design, and the temporary exhibitions often explore architecture and urban planning themes that put Tallinn's visible heritage in context.

It's a small museum but a worthwhile stop — particularly for the exhibits on Soviet-era construction, which transformed Estonian towns in ways that are still very visible. The building itself is handsome, and its location at the junction of the Old Town and the port district is convenient for a walk between the two areas.
