Tallinn Museum of Photography

Photography museum in the former city jail, with historical and contemporary exhibitions

The Tallinn Museum of Photography occupies the former city jail on Raekoja plats, a building that served as the main municipal prison from the 1880s. The exhibition space retains some of its original cell structure, which adds an odd atmospheric dimension to the photography shows.

The collection focuses on Estonian photography from the 19th century onward, with rotating contemporary exhibitions. It is small and easily covered in an hour, but the quality of the permanent historical collection — particularly the late 19th and early 20th century documentary photographs of Tallinn and Estonian rural life — is good.
