Estonian Open Air Museum

100-hectare museum of traditional Estonian farm buildings gathered from around the country

The Estonian Open Air Museum is a 100-hectare collection of traditional Estonian farm buildings, windmills, fishing villages, and rural structures gathered from every region of the country. Located in the suburb of Rocca al Mare, about 8 kilometres from the Old Town, it is the largest and best-presented museum of its kind in the Baltic states.

The farmsteads represent different periods and different regions of Estonia, from the 17th to the early 20th century. In summer, staff in period costume demonstrate traditional crafts — bread baking, blacksmithing, weaving — and the old inn serves traditional food. The setting among birch and pine woods, with the coast visible through the trees, makes it genuinely pleasant to walk through regardless of your interest in vernacular architecture.

A story
The oldest building in the museum, a Kolu farmstead from Järvamaa, dates to the 1660s. Moving these structures required dismantling them timber by timber, numbering each piece, transporting them here, and reconstructing them — a process that has continued since the museum opened in 1957. By Soviet standards, the museum was considered a safe form of national expression, which may explain why it was permitted to grow as generously as it did.
