Oulu Mörkö (Groke)

A naturally weathered boulder on the Oulu shore that bears an uncanny resemblance to the lonely, frozen Groke (Mörkö) from Tove Jansson's Moomin stories. Locals have adopted it as a small civic landmark and dress it up periodically — a scarf in winter, fairy lights at Christmas.

A modest curiosity, worth a quick stop on a walk along the waterfront. Like much of Oulu, it leans into the city's quietly absurd sense of humour.

A story
A particular boulder on the Oulu shore, weathered to the rough silhouette of the Mörkö from Tove Jansson's Moomin books, has been adopted by the city as an unofficial mascot — sometimes lit at night, sometimes wrapped in scarves in winter. Local children leave small offerings.
