Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Kakslauttanen, about 5 km northwest of Saariselkä village, is the original Finnish glass igloo resort and still the most famous. The thermal glass domes let you lie in bed watching the Northern Lights without getting cold, and the resort also runs traditional log cabins, snow igloos, and one of the world's largest smoke saunas.

Even if you are not staying here, the resort offers day visits to a reindeer farm, husky kennels, and short snowshoe excursions in winter. Book glass igloos months ahead for peak aurora season (December to March).

A story
Kakslauttanen's owner, Jussi Eiramo, built the first glass igloo in 1999 by hand after watching guests trudge outside in the cold to look for the aurora. The design has since been copied across the Arctic.
