Pontrieux

Breton river town on the tidal Trieux, known for restored lavoirs and half-timbered houses

Pontrieux is a small Breton town on the tidal River Trieux, known for its remarkable collection of private washhouses — over fifty lavoirs tucked along the riverbanks, many of them beautifully restored and open to visitors during guided boat trips in summer. It is a quiet, picturesque place with half-timbered houses reflected in the river, and a good stop on a tour of the Côtes-d'Armor.

The town comes alive on Thursday mornings for its market. From Pontrieux you can take a river cruise downstream through wooded banks towards the coast, or head north to explore the Pink Granite Coast around Perros-Guirec.

Things to Do

Pontrieux's main attraction is its extraordinary collection of lavoirs — private washhouses along the River Trieux. The Trieux river cruise runs downstream through wooded valleys to the coast from spring to autumn. The weekly market and the medieval tower of Château de la Roche Jagu nearby are worth combining into a day in the area.
