Molène

Tiny car-free Breton island in the Iroise Sea, ringed by reefs, seals, and lighthouses.

Molène is a speck of inhabited land in the Iroise Sea, west of Brest and Le Conquet. The island is small enough to walk around without thinking about transport, and exposed enough that the Atlantic always feels close: reefs, low stone houses, sea birds, and boats threading through the archipelago.

This is not a town of big monuments. Molène works because of its scale and isolation. The pleasure is in arriving by boat, walking the coast, looking out toward the lighthouses and islets, and feeling how much sea fits around one small village.

For a day trip, make the crossing from Le Conquet, walk the island loop, visit the Drummond Castle Museum, and leave time for the archipelago itself. If the weather is poor, Molène can feel severe; in clear light, it is one of Brittany's most distinctive island stops.
