Birkenkopf is Stuttgart's most powerful viewpoint because the panorama comes with a visible memory of destruction. After the Second World War, rubble from the bombed city was carried up the hill, raising it by dozens of metres; fragments of carved stone and broken facades still lie near the summit.
Locals call it Monte Scherbelino, roughly Mount Shards. The walk up is straightforward, and the view over Stuttgart is excellent, but the point is not only scenic. It is one of the clearest places in the city to understand how wartime damage and postwar rebuilding physically reshaped the landscape.
