One of Germany's most important art museums, the Staatsgalerie holds a collection spanning from the medieval period to contemporary art. The highlights include works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Picasso and Caspar David Friedrich, alongside a strong collection of 20th-century German and international art.
The building itself is worth attention: the older neoclassical wing dates from 1843, while the bold postmodern extension by James Stirling — opened in 1984 with its colourful tubular railings and curved ramps — became a landmark of late 20th-century architecture. The permanent collection is free on Wednesdays.
