Stadtbibliothek am Mailänder Platz

Stuttgart's city library moved into this striking cube-shaped building in 2011. Designed by Eun Young Yi after an international competition, it is severe from the outside and almost theatrical inside, with white galleries rising around a bright central void.

Visitors come as much for the architecture as for the books. The top-floor cafe gives a useful pause, and the building is easy to add to a walk around the modern Mailänder Platz district.
