The Kofel is the rocky 1,342-metre horn that rises directly above Oberammergau and serves as the village's natural emblem. It appears on the cover of half the local guidebooks and you can see it from almost any street. The summit holds a large wooden cross visible from below on a clear day.
The walk up takes around two hours from the village. The path starts gentle through forest, then climbs steeply over rock and roots, with a cable-secured final section that needs a head for heights. The view from the top — over Oberammergau, the Ammergau valley, and across to the Zugspitze — is the best in the immediate area. Allow four to five hours round trip; do not attempt in wet weather.
