Uelzen is a small Lower Saxony town that would be easy to miss if its station had not been transformed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. That station is the reason most travellers notice Uelzen, and it is odd enough to justify a stop if you are moving between Hamburg, Hanover, and the Lueneburg Heath.
The town behind it is quiet but pleasant, with brick churches, half-timbered corners, and a compact centre rebuilt after wartime damage. Uelzen is not a major destination, and it should not be dressed up as one. It is a worthwhile one-day detour for architecture-minded travellers, rail travellers, and anyone already nearby who wants a small-town break with one genuinely distinctive landmark.
Pair the Hundertwasser-Bahnhof with St Mary's Church and a walk through the old centre. That is enough for a relaxed visit, not a full weekend.
