Husum

North Frisian harbour town in Schleswig-Holstein, known as Theodor Storm's grey town by the sea.

Husum is the main town of North Frisia, set just inland from the Wadden Sea on Germany's North Sea coast. The writer Theodor Storm called it the "grey town by the sea", which still fits: brick houses, a tidal inland harbour, big skies, and a working coastal mood rather than resort polish.

The town has enough for a rewarding day: the harbour, the Schloss vor Husum, North Frisian museums, and Storm's literary traces. In spring, millions of purple crocuses bloom in the castle park, an odd and lovely sight against the northern brick.

Husum also makes sense as a base for the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. Ferries and causeways lead toward islands and Halligen, and the Wadden Sea is close enough to shape the light, weather, and food of the town.

Eating Out

Husum is a good place for North Sea fish and plain Frisian cooking around the harbour and old town.
