The beaches west of Kavala along the coast towards Nea Peramos are the main options. Ammolofoi is the busiest and most organised, about 10 km from the city, with sand dunes, water sports, and beach bars. Palio, a series of coves between Tosca and Nea Iraklitsa, is calmer and better for families. Nea Iraklitsa is a longer resort beach. Thassos island, an hour by ferry, has better beaches in more attractive settings and makes an excellent day trip.
