Kavala is a fishing port and the quality of fresh seafood is high. The best tavernas are in the Panagia district and along the harbour front, where you can eat grilled fish and octopus with local white wine while looking across the bay. The fish market near the port is worth a look in the morning. The Panagia area also has a handful of ouzeris serving traditional meze. Most restaurants shift menus and locations between summer and winter; the old town holds year-round.
